I don't think your picture worked, Rob.

Just for laughs I asked logo_make_logo on Fiverr.com to design us something.

I think another thing we need to look at too is that this is a non-profit organization. Yes it is a business, there is no doubt about that. But we are not selling a product. We are selling an idea. Although that is debatable, most organizations symbolize what they are about with their logo. I just think about branding when I think of a ultra-simple symbol. I just don't think it fits.

Well I believe the box would be a good representation. I think Matt has done a very good job of illustrating the three images. I don't feel that this logo is busy at all. It's original and it encompasses what we are trying to do right? I've done a couple with varying text options, but what about without the text? I'm just having a hard time understanding what we are trying to accomplish with this. We are not going to be a nationwide/international brand, i.e. Apple, Arduino, etc. Those companies can afford to have a very simple, single icon logo. They are iconic. I just think we should have something that should tell the viewer what we do rather than make them guess. For very professional purposes I think the box without type is viable option. I think it really communicates as well. Building blocks, tools, hand that makes me think of a community. It's simple, and I can see how the 3D text can be too much. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks its good, idk, but I think if this doesn't work, we need to focus on what is going to be enough. What is going to satisfy everything?

I'm strongly in favor of a logo that's simple and readable, and I'm fine with just having a symbol to go next to our name. But our name needs to be prominent and easy to read because we're new and nobody knows our name yet. So let's make it easy for them to learn it.

I'd also like to see something that's "hip" but not too hip.  I think it has to be appealing to all ages and also businesslike.  Don't forget that we're going to be approaching businesses and other organizations to ask for large financial donations and other kinds of support.  IMHO, a plain and simple logo with help us more with them than one that's too artsy or overly complicated.

I'm thinking a logo that is just a simple shape.  Arduino, Sparkfun, Gmail, Dropbox and Apple all have just a shape.  I would love to see just a shape that can represent us.  We gotta keep in mind that we are catering to a more artsy community, so we need to have more of a hip logo.  I would love to see a visual representation of what our makerspace is, rather than a play on the name.

I think it's too busy. I think we might be getting too complicated. It should be simple so that all elements can be seen easily. Like say we had a bumper sticker, I could easily see someone have one of those circle logos in their rear window, but the gears and the logo above would have to be pretty big to make the words visible. I don't know, just my thought.  We need to really sit down and come up with quick statements and objects that define RMS to help us design a logo (not to be confused with our mission statement, these would be solely for the purpose of coming up with a logo). For example "the possibilities are endless" might make us think of an infinity sign, or "spark your imagination" brings to mind a simple spark or flame logo.

Trying to make the sides parallel makes it look real goofy, and off in perspective. Look in the drop box for the .ai with perspectiveguides in the title. That way you can try and look for yourself. However I brought them out a bit more and they look better. The text can always be tweaked but it is bigger as well. Examples:

Will do. This is basically just a mock-up, but I think it looks good. My father who is an accomplished graphic designer/advertiser, said the same thing about the text. Basically what I'm going to do is outline the letters, and then tweak them. Other than that what do you think?

I would try to make the sides parallel. And the letters bigger.

Matt could you possibly email those first three images to me? That's of course if you're okay with letting me use them. Like them a lot.

A forum post with images YEAH!

It doesn't quite reach out and grab me yet.  But don't let me discourage you.  And don't get discouraged by a general lack of feedback.  This web site has only been up for three  weeks and it doesn't get much traffic yet.  We really need to put up flyers and do other things ASAP to generate more visitors, especially visitors from Rochester NY.

And because of your work they're going to have stuff to look at when they get here.

I've come up with a couple more ideas. I know the gear was a sore point for some, but I like these. Can try different fonts and such. Let me know what you guys think.

RMS_Gear_NoCut_Middle Font RMS_Gear_NoCut_BottomFont RMS_Gear_B&W RMS_Gear_B&W_FB

Also the upload file is broken. It does not appear under the edit box.

Those logos are lookin pretty good.

I would personally recommend against the outline only logos, it can make certain marketing a tad more difficult… I do like the black and grey as it is subtle.  If we are still looking to have fliers and such for June 1st we do need to make a final decision soon on the logo especially if we are looking to start any type of trademarking on it.  I will also be using what ever logo we come up with as part of the new header for the site as well as the favicon.

Okay well, I've been trying my hand at this and I think it's time to bring it out of the email. So here we go. Here are a couple different proofs based on the same logo. Please share your thoughts, ideas, if you would like to see a color scheme, upload your ideas, etc. I think these are pretty good, and I'm willing to try different things, just let me know. These go along with Rory's suggestion of a homage to Rochester in the form of an Art Deco theme. I personally like the first, outline only logo, and the black and white one.
