I want to get a flyer or brochure designed in the next few weeks so we can start distributing them. For SEO (Search Engine Optimization) reasons I want to stick with the current name for now.  But I'm not sure if it's better to use "Maker Space" or "MakerSpace."  MakerSpace is a little hipper but Maker Space might be much more effective at getting us ranked higher on the search engines.

We also need to decide if we want to get a logo designed.

I'd also like to get some input on our tag line which is currently "A Workshop with Tools, Training & Collaboration for Makers, Artists and Craftsmen."  I believe it is VERY IMPORTANT that it both clearly and concisely describes who/what we are, both for advertising and SEO purposes. It would be really great if we could incorporate the word "Rochester" and still keep it short.

I was wondering if anyone has any better ideas or if there are any marketing gurus out there who would like to take over and run with this task

BTW, here are some other tag lines I came up with:

  • A place for sharing tools & knowledge in Rochester NY
  • A community workshop with tools, training & assistance for those who want to make things
  • Tools, training & Collaboration for Makers, Builders, Artists & Craftsmen
  • Tools, training & Collaboration for Makers, Artists and Craftsmen
  • Tools, training & Collaboration for Makers, Builders, Artists & Craftsmen in Rochester NY
  • A Shared Community Workshop where Craftsmen, Makers & Artists can Meet and Work
  • Where people who like to make things can share tools and knowledge

My vote is definitely MakerSpace.  I even like "Makerspace" better (without the capital S).  I think Maker Space looks kind of awkward.

Here are some ideas for taglines that I came up with:

  • Rochester's Community Workshop for Builders and Artists
  • Rochester's Community Workshop, Laboratory, and Learning Center
  • Rochester's workshop and collaboration space.
  • A Tinkerer's Playground
  • Workshop and Project Space for the Rochestarian

As for a logo, I agree that we should make one soon.  Along with a color scheme.

Is this a standard forum template?  Its kind of acting funny on my end.  (namely the posts dont show up until random times, and the times always change)

I think you're right about "Makerspace."  I also like it best and it's what other spaces are using.

Do you or anyone else know anyone who can design a flyer and/or logo for us inexpensively (or for free)?  I sent this person on Craigslist an email because they charge so little there wouldn't be any risk in giving them a try. But they didn't respond.

If I had at least $250 I'd give LogoArena.com or one of its copycats a try.  Colleges are about done for the year so they we may not be able to find much help there.  Other low cost possibilities include places like eLance.com or even Fiverr.com

I don't think we need the perfect logo right now.  Just something decent we can get started with.

I also like many of your tagline suggestions.  Especially the first two.

PLEASE let me know if you continue experiencing problems.  I like this forum plugin because it interfaces perfectly with Wordpress but it's no good if it doesn't work right.  It also recently lost, probably just temporarily, the ability to upload pictures and videos from your computer.

I also prefer MakerSpace and agree there should probably be a logo. As for the tag line, I know we want key words, but it should be short sweet and to the point. I like what you've suggested, maybe we can tweak it to look like the first two or three Matt suggested. For example, I like i3 Detroits : Metro Detroit's Art & Technology Collective.

Rob:  Ya, the forum is pretty buggy.  Is there another one that is easy to implement? Otherwise, we can use it for now.

As for the logo:

I just tried my hand at it in illustrator.

I think my favorite is the one on the right column, third one down.

Does anyone else have any ideas for a basic logo?  The wrench part looks kind of too awkward, maybe. Anyway, if someone sketches out another one, I can work on that.

EDIT:  Just a continuation of a thought:

          Also, a poster:

Sorry Matt for taking so long to reply.  I think you deserve an award for initiative and enthusiasm.  I'll talk to you when we meet tomorrow about your design.  But tonight I want to tell you that I got a call from a graphic designer that I'd contacted a few days ago.  She's willing to design us a logo for FREE.

She's willing to come up with some ideas without input from us.  But it would be better if we can give her some ideas about what we'd like.  So let's start brainstorming.

Who's got ideas?

Here's some more logo ideas:

I think the logo should have a super simple shape.  Things that could go in the logo could be: Hand tools, Hazard symbols, craft things, welder, saw blade, gear, "cut here" dotted line, and a play on the letters RMS.

Hey all… Sean here…

I'm going to be working on fixing the quirks/issues with the forum; among other things.

We def need a logo as it's the easiest way to pull everything together marketing wise.  As far as the name goes, it won't affect SEO either way because we can tailor/control that; I'll be making sure we're covered in that arena as well.  Saw that there is another entire discussion for logos so, I'll be making some additional comments there as well.

My vote would be for MakerSpace and more specific Roc MakerSpace or Rochester MakerSpace, the lack of white space is most certainly a tad more trendy right now.

Hello All,

I am sending out a form via email so that we can decide on a Tagline and also the spelling of Maker Space.  It should take you 23.6 seconds at the most.

Cheers!
