Found a flier for Rochester Makerspace on the bulletin board on floor two in The Hungerford building – near my studio. The QR code got me curious enough to finally even download a QR reader app. The place looks so exciting and I cant wait to hear more about the progress. I will be staying in touch with your blog.

Hi Francesca,

Here's a quick update.  We signed a lease and started moving into almost 4,000 square feet on February 1st.  We had hoped to open officially on the 15th and then March 1st, but our furnace needed to be replaced and that probably won't be completed until tomorrow.  We're also still waiting for the landlord to sand and refinish the floors, and to install a key card access system for the outside door and the doors to our two spaces (the main one and our woodshop).

We're still building workbenches and tables, moving equipment in, and organizing things. It's also probably going to take us two or three months to learn how to properly operate a makerspace. But we hope to start ramping up operations this week and getting people into it and working on their own projects ASAP.  We really need to get members signed up so we can pay the rent, but we are going to have some free use of the space.  And for the next couple of months we're offering an introductory membership rate of $40/month for an individual, family or student membership.

It looks like you're do lampwork in your avatar.  If so, we appreciate it if you would tell us what it would take to get that activity going in our makerspace.

Rob

You would want to talk to Rochester Arc and Flame or Studio 34. They would have all the right answers.
