It doesn’t matter what you make. Working with tools leads to learning.

You learn new skills and different ways to apply old ones. You learn how to find solutions to problems. And you learn how to plan ahead and to persevere.

Working with tools develops useful marketable skills and positive character traits you won't learn by watching TV, playing video games or surfing the net.

We’re building a “Delta” 3D printer for our Makerspace

Our Solidoodle 3D printer is now available to use after you’ve had some training. We think there could be some long waits to use it as we get more members, so we’re building another printer. It’s a “delta robot” that looks and works much differently than older designs. Watch the 40-second video if you would like to see how it operates because it’s pretty hard to describe. We have nearly all the parts we need and it will probably be assembled soon, although it will take longer than that to get it working and calibrated properly.

This new printer is going to cost about $400 to $500. Our nonprofit makerspace is just getting started and we’re broke, so a handful of our supporters have loaned us the money to build it.  Someday we’ll need to pay them back, plus we’d like to build or buy even more p3D rinters.  So we may seek donations, selling shares that will allow you to use it, or charge a very small hourly fee to use it.

I just saw this service: http://www.makexyz.com/

Looks like it is a good way to improve the profitability of a 3d printer. Doesn’t look like there’s anyone in Rochester yet. Downside is you have to find someone to babysit the prints as they happen.

At least one person here in Rochester also has a delta printer. ;-)

I’ve been doing 3D printing for a couple years now, in addition to a whole universe of other hacker-geek stuff.

I never found the time to get involved with Rochester’s other hackerspace, maybe I’ll get involved with you guys.

    Dave,

We’d love it if you’d get involved. There’s an enormous amount of interest in 3D printing and we need more teachers and mentors to help the beginners get started.

We also have many visitors, especially on Thursday nights, who come just to learn more about the technology.

And we just like seeing people using the space and our equipment to make stuff :-)
